Quadriceps Tendon Rupture

The quadriceps tendon is found right above the patella (kneecap). It acts as an extensor mechanism in conjunction with the quadriceps muscle, kneecap and patellar tendon. Without this mechanism, straightening of the knee would not be possible. Forces are applied through the quadriceps tendon as part of the function that allows the knee to straighten.

Due to its function, the quadriceps tendon is capable of absorbing a considerable amount of force. If the quadriceps tendon is injured, a rupture may occur. Partial quadriceps tendon tears are common in athletic activities. Pain is experienced over the kneecap, which gets worse over time or with continued activity.

A complete quadriceps tendon tear is typically associated with people with existing medical conditions. Weakness of the tendon may result in a rupture when the quadriceps muscle is contracting while the knee is straightening at the same time. This puts exceptional strain on the quadriceps tendon, resulting in injury. When a complete quadriceps rupture occurs, straightening of the knee is not possible without aid.

Nonsurgical treatment options are available from Silicon Valley Orthopaedics for partial quadriceps tendon tears. However, a complete rupture will require surgery. Dr. Nic Gay and Dr. Masi Reynolds are both accomplished orthopedic surgeons, so your care will be in the best hands possible at all times.
