Clavicle Fracture

The clavicle is more commonly known as the collarbone. This bone connects the sternum (breastbone) to the shoulders. It is located at either side of the shoulder and may suffer a fracture due to an injury or accident. People with a genetic vulnerability or illness, such as osteoarthritis, may be more susceptible to clavicle fractures.

In most cases, an x-ray is needed to confirm a clavicle fracture. Treatment for this shoulder injury is provided by an orthopedic surgeon. At Silicon Valley Orthopaedics, Dr. Nic Gay and Dr. Masi Reynolds combine their knowledge of sports medicine and orthopedic surgery to provide patients with a range of treatment options.

Conservative treatments include using a sling or figure-eight splint. This prevents the injured area from moving, allowing time for the clavicle to heal. Recovery can take a number of weeks, and surgery may be recommended if conservative treatment fails to produce desired results.

Diagnosis of a Fractured Clavicle

Pain around the clavicle and a visible bulge are indications of a potentially fractured clavicle. If you are experiencing symptoms, seeking a diagnosis from Silicon Valley Orthopaedics is recommended. Dr. Nic Gay and Dr. Masi Reynolds can carry out a comprehensive examination. Your medical history, lifestyle and details of any injury or accident are discussed.

An x-ray will help to establish the nature and severity of damage to the clavicle. An individualized treatment plan will then be created. Dr. Nic Gay and Dr. Masi Reynolds are committed to offering conservative and joint preservation treatment options. We will work closely with you to ensure that treatment for a broken clavicle takes your work and lifestyle into account.
