Shoulder Instability

You may suffer from shoulder instability if the lining of the shoulder joint tears, detaches or stretches. The ligaments and labrum may suffer similar injuries, causing the ball of the shoulder joint to dislocate or detach. In both instances, the shoulder may partially or completely shift out of the socket.

A feeling that the shoulder is “giving way” is usually accompanied by pain. The Silicon Valley Orthopaedics team can provide a clinical examination, which may include imaging tests like x-rays. There are several potential causes of shoulder pain, so it is important to determine the correct diagnosis.

Common causes of shoulder instability include labral tears, genetic predisposition and arthritis. You may experience either a partial or complete dislocation of the shoulder joint. Performing any action that involves moving the shoulder can cause pain, swelling and weakness in the arm.

If the shoulder dislocates, Dr. Nic Gay or Dr. Masi Reynolds can perform a procedure known as a reduction to manipulate the ball back into the correct position within the socket. It is important that you do not attempt to correct a dislocation at home. One wrong move may cause additional damage to bony structures, ligaments or tendons.
